The Curved Line Belongs To the Gods

Deep in the San Rafael Swell, off Temple Mountain Road, down a wash and through a canyon, a heart of lichen emerges from a frieze of Red Rock and sandstone. 

America's Red Rock Wilderness and the San Rafael Swell in particular cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The geographic formations, biodiversity, and unique beauty contribute to America's tapestry of wild places. With over 2000 square miles of public land, Americans have many opportunities to explore and appreciate the San Rafael Swell.

Increasingly, forces within our society seek to propagate a sense of distaste towards public land. Red Rocks, cinnamon and crimson in quiet afternoon light, are not seen for what they are, but how they can be exploited. The answer lies in the heart of lichen, along the curved stroke of stone, which belongs to the Gods. Now is a time to love, and to come together, and to seek understanding. 

The above image was composed in October of 2024 on a hike deep into an isolated slot canyon with some close friends. Our time together burned incandescently with dignity, compassion, and empathy. Only memories remain, and The Curved Line Belongs to The Gods is the tonal emotion that I brought back with me. Leave only footprints; take only photographs.
