Salt Lake Plain: Remembering Corrals

Afternoon light spills through rain clouds overlooking a corral near Great Salt Lake’s southern shore. Sandwiched between an active US Air Force test site, magnesium processing plant, and Great Salt Lake, the corral has broken in horses for years. Just beyond and obscured partially by the ridge line, open mines in the Rowley Industrial Area stretch right to the shoreline, in competition with an increasingly fragile ecosystem.

Strong tonal variation and contrast made this image extremely compelling, both as a finished product and during the compositional process. After scouting the ridgeline for a couple hours, I simply sat waiting for strong afternoon summer light to work its magic, and Mother Earth did the rest. I am just a witness.
