Lunar Symphony

Early morning light illuminates the eastern face of Gypsum Mountain in Wyoming's Wind River Range. The Wind River Range is a high-altitude montane setting carved by some 63 glaciers, leaving behind imposing monuments of granite and sloping strata. We reached the location where the photograph was composed in through an alpine forest cloaked in deep darkness.

After a night interfacing with the cosmos, alternatively staring at a fire fed with conifer pinecones and the celestial glow of the Milky Way over the distant Wyoming Range, I rose early. The piercing howl of a moose - probably sparring with another during early mating season - jolted me awake. Then I unzipped my tent.

Almost immediately, the interplay of light and carved stone on Gypsum Mountain's eastern face caught my eyes. Emerald in the same light, the texture of conifers on a nearby ridgeline adds fine detail to the foreground.

Visual compression was achieved by employing a telephoto lens to create a sense of size. The looming eastern face of Gypsum Mountain is reminiscent of a lunar ascent over a ridgeline, in total symphony with Earthly nature.
